Heroes know their "foods"

Epicurean traveler Bigfang uses a QNAP TS-653A to record his gourmet experiences.

  • Background

Before becoming a full-time blogger, Bigfang served as a security engineer for more than ten years. In those busy working days, his favorite pastimes were travel and food . At first he just wanted to share his favorite foods with friends, but this simple and easy idea unexpectedly made him a gourmet blogger, as he created the "bigfangblog @ Travel Fun" blog page.

After more than eight years of blogging, in 2013-2015, the blog became the top site in PixNET rankings for annual user views. With his enthusiasm for travel and gourmet food he has traveled Asia, Oceania, North America, and Europe. With more than 1,500 articles on Japanese tourism and food recommendations, the site has become known as a Japanese travel textbook.

  • Challenges

    Soaring storage demands

To maintain the popularity of the blog, Bigfang needs to publish at least two travel articles daily, and he needs to check out locations from time to time all over the world. During his travels, besides carrying a camera, monocular and mobile phones, Bigfang also began shooting 4K video with a GoPro to make the blog more vivid. Over the past eight years, more than 120,000 photos have been organized and published on the Internet. In consideration of the massive photos and ever-increasing photo pixel and video specifications, Bigfang started to look for a solution with convenient classification, sharing, and large storage space for uploads.

    Risk of files loss

Bigfang has also used USB drives and mobile hard drives for file backup, but these devices are not only difficult to organize, it is also easy to get damaged during travel as a result of walking and shaking. For Bigfang, when an article needs to be published, any file loss related to photos are intolerable. The bitter experience of data loss in the past and his own security background made Bigfang deeply aware of the importance of data backup. For Bigfang, the ideal backup solution must not only have large storage space but also convenient management.

Solution

Updating travel information in real time is an important part of Bigfang's travel. To ensure the protection of photos, Bigfang connects to his QNAP NAS at home to backup photos immediately after getting back to his hotel. QNAP NAS provides a web-based management interface, it can also instantly sync photos through FTP.

Bigfang uses a QNAP NAS TS-653A with six WD Red™ 4TB hard drives for photo archiving and backup. The TS-653A has a Intel® Celeron® quad-core processor and SATA 6Gb/s, providing up to 416 MB/s read/write performance for smoother and faster photo storage and backup. WD Red™ hard drives feature silent, low-temperature operation and 24-hour operating modes to provide photographers and travelers with 24/7 backup throughout the year.

  • Large storage space and multiple backup mechanisms

The QNAP TS-653A can use six hard drives to meet backup needs. Bigfang is very particular about protection of his photos. Besides using RAID as the main backup mechanism, he also uses the TS-653A’s built-in snapshot settings to avoid potential data loss caused by accidental deletion or ransomware attacks. In addition, Bigfang also takes advantage of the RTRR backup mechanism to regularly backup the current TS-653A to a remote NAS to achieve multiple backups.

  • 24-hour FTP server, worry-free file sharing

The TS-653A can be an FTP server through a web-based management interface to solve a travel photographer's need to share and exchange large files. FTP allows users to transfer files that are too large to be sent via email and is a very convenient and fast file sharing platform.

  • Cross-platform collaboration greatly enhances efficiency

There are often different operating systems and devices such as Windows and Mac in the same work environment. The existence of common folders are definitely the key to improving work productivity. The TS-653A can create a large shared repository of files for Windows, Mac, Linux and even mobile devices. Bigfang can sync travel photos and videos with work partners via shared folders, making it easy to create more than 700 articles each year.

  • Smooth 4K video playback

Just text is not enough! In recent years, Bigfang also carries a GoPro for filming, so he often needs to quickly preview and edit videos. The TS-653A uses an 8th generation Intel® HD graphics chip that supports video hardware decoding and playback, and can automatically convert common 4K or 1080P videos to a format that can be played smoothly on computers and smart TVs. The TS-653A also supports offline transfer of files, even if the network speed is slow, it still can automatically convert video files to a lower resolution.

  • WD Red™ all-time protection

Whether it is for the current TS-653A or the previously-used 4-bay NAS, Bigfang always uses reliable WD Red™ hard drives. WD Red™ provides SATA 6Gb/s transfer bandwidth for quick file access. In addition, the NAS-dedicated WD Red™ hard drives use WD's proprietary NASWARE 3.0 technology that uses a unique algorithm that balances performance and reliability in both NAS and RAID environments.

Results

The TS-653A in combination with WD Red™ hard drives help to achieve increased productivity and data stability. In terms of hardware performance, WD Red™ not only meets Bigfang’s requirements for capacity expansion and 24-hour reliable backup, but the built-in NASWARE 3.0 features and QNAP systems have also passed compatibility certification to improve system integration and storage efficiency. As for software, the TS-653A has FTP support, common folders and 4K video transcoding to assist Bigfang in organizing and displaying his eight years of photos and videos. Bigfang and his work partners can now work together easier and make publishing more efficient.
